General reminder that lots of small Mastodon instances is better than a few big Mastodon instances

@sir I think the actual best mix of instance size and instance count is somewhere in-between.

Users benefit from being in communities that are larger than tiny, because moderation applies to lots of people at once and a community can create a strong code of conduct--but that effect only scales out so far, of course, as you noted.

There's also an unfortunate effect of spreading administrative effort more thinly when there are lots of little instances to deal with, playing whack-a-mole with bad communities.
