@sir it's been tried. People at Google invented half these techniques and shipped open source tools to make websites smaller/faster. Invented new kinds of compression, improved protocols, etc. Their tech evangelists published articles with good techniques. NY Times is not terrible because their webdevs don't know how to do better. This is structural, you have to look at incentives. AMP devs decided asking nicely won't change things, got buy-in for mobile incentives.
@sir disclaimer: though it might look like it, I'm not defending them, exactly. I still haven't decided whether AMP is good or bad. I think it may be like Tor where I never will make up my mind and goes in the "it's complicated" bin.
