wxrc is a good example of how building Wayland compositors based on wlroots is more compilcated than building an X11 window manager, but the payoff in flexibility is totally worth it. A mostly functional VR Wayland compositor based on wlroots can be built in just over 2,000 lines of C. Try doing that with Xlib!
