I like to point out that, as someone who used to regularly deal with newbies on GitHub, not everyone is used to the GitHub flow, either. You had to learn it sometime. The chicken and egg problem here is insurmountable, the only solution is to wait for the network effects to kick in.

Correction: You don't need to have an account to get read access to public repositories.
